'The Conscience of Chester A. Arthur.'
Footnote's first episode.
In June of 1880, a series of extraordinary events began to unfold that sent a man most of the country agreed was completely unqualified to be president into the Oval Office. When he first became president, he may have been the most mistrusted person in America. But then he started receiving mysterious letters from a stranger, and decided to become a better man.

That man was Chester Alan Arthur.

'Neighborhood watches grow in Oakland.'

As the police department is squeezed by budget cuts and layoffs, rates for serious crimes like burglary, robbery and homicide have risen more than 20 percent over last year. Civilians are increasingly taking responsibility for the safety of their own neighborhoods.

'Female veterans return to different challenges.'
Over 200,000 women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The transition from combat to the homefront can be a challenge for all veterans but many women return with troubles their male counterparts may not experience.

'Sara Paretsky's criminal mind.'
Crime writer Sara Paretsky and her fictional detective protagonist, V.I. Warshawski, both call Chicago home. Like her detective creation, Paretsky spends a lot of time pounding the pavement; but she hunts for inspiration, not clues. Paretsky recently took Alison Cuddy on a tour of some of the places in Chicago that inspire her criminally inclined mind.

Family Faces Move of Five Generations in the Path of O'Hare Runway

As Chicago fights to keep a planned expansion of O’Hare International Airport on track, plans to condemn the cemetery are moving ahead after a nine-year legal fight.
“There are loved ones out there who have been buried for well over a hundred years who we have no living loved ones identified for,” Michael Kirchhoff said. “As we speak, the church has no say in this matter. But we’ve cared for these graves for 160 years now.” Read more here.

Businesses Competing To Attract Filipinos Sending Money Home

Many OFWs, or Overseas Filipino Workers, often couldn't afford to return to the Philippines for years at a time, and while they could send money to help their families, many found it impersonal.

"We become the bridge for them," Carido says. "It's not just a box. They're not just materials, but connections."
